Ebony Smith, BSN, RN is a proud native Detroiter and registered nurse with over a decade of experience in multiple healthcare settings. She’s worked in ambulatory care, community nursing, med-surg with a focus on nephrology and maternal/child health. Ebony has offered education to various audiences throughout her nursing career. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Grambling State University. Her experience at an HBCU fueled her passions and interests in social equity and supporting communities of color similar to where she lived as an adolescent.Ebony is committed to bringing awareness to the benefits of using cannabis for medicinal purposes and removing the negative stigma associated with the plant.

She currently works in a busy healthcare facility in Detroit, MI where she provides an array of services to uninsured and underinsured patients. She has been fortunate to work with all ages from birth to elderly while serving diverse populations over the course of her career. Ebony is proficient in motivational interviewing, ​a client-centered counseling style for evoking behavior change by assisting clients to explore and resolve ambivalence. She is a firm believer that the patient is the true driver in making strides toward positive lifestyle changes and considers herself more of a resource for support and knowledge than an expert. She has a special gift for relating to patients on a personal level in spite of age, background and differences. She takes pride offering compassionate care and serves as an advocate for her clients and the community as it relates to using cannabis as alternative medicine.

Nurse Smith is a member of the Cannabis Nurses Network, the American Cannabis Nurses Association and Minorities for Medical Marijuana. She has offered insight from a healthcare professional’s perspective in regards to cannabis use to various community organizations throughout the Metro Detroit area and currently serves as a board member for Higher Learning Institutions in Pontiac, Michigan. Nurse Smith holds a certificate as a Medical Cannabis Consultant and through research and direct patient care, she has emerged as a leader in her field and regularly champions cannabis use in her daily practice. Through her passion for advocacy and community, Ebony served on the City of Detroit’s ​workgroup for adult use (recreational) marijuana implementation and related social equity considerations. She is co-founder of Midwest CannaNursesTM, a Detroit based consulting company that specializes in cannabis education and advocacy. ​
