Cherie Cofield recently completed her PhD in nursing at Wayne State University. She’s held a 3.78 GPA in spite of divorce and other challenges faced during her PhD studies. Her study will be ground breaking in adolescents with chronic pain from sickle cell disease that participate in a mindfulness martial arts program. This is the first time chronic pain, function, and perceived control over pain is being studied in this patient population. Cherie also holds a Bachelor and Master’s degree in Nursing. Cherie is full-time faculty at the University of Michigan and works
adjunct at many other colleges.


During the pandemic, Cherie had to shift and became a Cannabis Nurse Consultant which resulted in her starting her own business. 2C CannaHealth and Wellness which provides premium CBD products for anyone with a chronic condition that wants “Relief Without the High.”

Teaching

Full-time Faculty at University of Michigan:
Teaching brings together experience gained as a practicing nurse, researcher, and educator to
nurses who are entering the profession. The job of the educator is to foster each student’s
abilities, through the encouragement of investigation, inquiry, and dedication, to ensure success.
Clinicals taught to undergraduate students include:
Fundamental clinical on a hematology/oncology unit
Medical-Surgical I on a medical unit
Medical-Surgical II, III, & IV on a medical and a surgical unit and virtually Community Health Nursing virtually Displaying an open student-centered learning environment, to ask questions, as well as demonstrating problem solving skills for the student is key to teaching. Mentoring students strengthen their knowledge and self-confidence, it provides emotional and moral support which
is imperative to their success. Mentoring increases the student's ability to successfully complete their nursing program, become registered nurses and encourage continuing their education. Teaching is investing in the next generation of nursing scholars.
